GENESIS III [Vulgate]

English Translation

Vulgate (Latin): Genesis Chapter 3

1 But the serpent was more cunning than all the living creatures of the earth which the Lord God had made. He said to the woman: Why did God command you not to eat from every tree in the garden?

2 To whom the woman answered: We eat of the fruit of the trees which are in the garden.

3 But concerning the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God commanded us not to eat of it, and not to touch it, lest we should die.

4 And the serpent said to the woman: Do not die by any means.

5 For God knows that on whatever day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.

6 Then the woman saw that it was a good tree for food, and beautiful to the eyes, and pleasing to the sight: and she took of its fruit and ate, and gave it to her husband, who ate.

7 And the eyes of both were opened; and when they knew that they were naked, they sewed together fig leaves and made themselves loincloths.

8 And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden at the afternoon breeze, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God in the middle of the tree of the garden.

9 And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him: Where art thou?

10 He said: I heard your voice in paradise, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself.

11 To whom he said: For who told you that you were naked, except that you ate from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?

12 And Adam said: The woman whom you gave me as a partner gave me some of the tree, and I ate.

13 And the Lord God said to the woman: Why did you do this? She answered: The serpent deceived me, and I ate.

14 And the Lord God said to the serpent: [Because you have done this,
Cursed art thou among all living things, and among the beasts of the earth:
you shall tread upon your breast, and eat the earth all the days of your life.

15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and your seed and his seed:
she would crush your head
and you will be ensnared by his heel.]

16 He also said to the woman: I will multiply your wombs and your conceptions: you will give birth to children in pain, and you will be under the power of your husband, and he will rule over you.

17 But he said to Ada: Because you heard the voice of your wife and ate from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground in your work: in your labors you will eat from it all the days of your life.

18 Thorns and thistles shall spring up for you, and you shall eat the grass of the earth.

19 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the earth from which you were taken: for you are dust and to dust you will return.

20 And Adam called the name of his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living creatures.

21 The Lord God also made skin coats for Hades and his wife and clothed them.

22 And he said: Behold, Adam has become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, let him not perhaps put forth his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.

23 And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure to work the earth from which he was taken.

24 And he cast out Adam: and placed before the paradise of pleasure a cherubim, and a flaming sword, and versatile, to guard the way of the tree of life.

Vulgate (Latin): Genesis Chapter 3
Quæ respondit: Serpens decepit me, et comedi.
ipsa conteret caput tuum,
